Joys of Companion Gardening

Don joined the Master Gardener program in 1994 after he retired and has been very active through the years especially with the addition of a 28' x 36' greenhouse to their yard.  Many varieties of vegetables are raised in his garden including tomatoes, turnips, green beans, lima beans, radishes, lettuce, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peppers, corn, zucchini, etc. Tomatoes are his specialty and most years he plants about sixty different varieties. These products are eaten, frozen, canned, and shared with others, especially the Samaritan Center.  Plants are started in February from seed   in the greenhouse.  Don also does a radio call-in talk show the second and fourth Monday of the month in Jefferson City.

Don and Ruth Ann Schnieders will be married 50 years in May 2008.  They made Marriage Encounter in St. Louis, MO in about 1973.  St. Joseph Cathedral is their parish and they have been active members since the beginning of the Cathedral.  Both are graduates of St. Peter High School and both were born and raised inJefferson City and each of their families have eight children - four boys and four girls.  They are the parents of six daughters and one son and seventeen grand-children have been added to their family.  Don and Ruth Ann owned and operated Don Schnieders Excavating Company for twenty-five years until their retirement.
